Since first starting an Expos web site three years ago, the
subject that has generated the most e-mail has been the meaning of the Expos logo. Here is
my understanding of how the Expos came to be known as the Expos and the creation of their
team logo.
One of the most successful franchises in professional sports is the Montreal
Canadiens. Their official name is "Le Club de Hockey Canadien de Montreal - thus the
CH on their sweater.
When Charles Bronfman and John McHale were looking for a
team name and logo in 1968, they decided to call their team "le Club
de Baseball Expos de Montreal" - therefore the initials became the C, B, E, and M.
The monicker "Expos" is from the world's fair held in Montreal in 1967, which
was known as Expo 67.
The C is hard to see, but it is on the outside of the small
E. Some people even have gone so far as to say that the C and B stand for Charles
Bronfman, but I doubt it.
If you have any other information on the history of the
Expos logo, please write
me.
