EXPOS ANNOUNCE 40-MAN 2001 WINTER ROSTER The Montreal Expos today announced the club's 40-man winter roster for the 2001 season with the addition of five players whose contracts have been purchased from the minor leagues. The purchased players are infielders Scott Hodges and Henry Mateo, outfielder Wilken Ruan, catcher Sandy Martinez and RHP Donnie Bridges. The Expos also announced the outright of LHP Sean Spencer from the Expos’ 40-man roster to AAA-Ottawa. The announcements were made by Expos’ Vice President, General Manager, Jim Beattie. Hodges, 21, a 6-0,190 lb. third baseman from Louisville, KY was selected by the Expos in the first round (38th overall) of the 1997 June Draft. He batted .306 (129-for-422) with 32 doubles, 14 homers and 83 RBI in 111 games with A-Jupiter of the Florida State League before appearing in six games with AA-Harrisburg to close out the 2000 campaign. Hodges, who was named to the FSL post-season All-Star squad while finishing 8th in the league in batting, set career highs for hits, doubles, homers and RBI since making his professional debut in 1997. He officially wrapped up his season in the Arizona Fall League where he batted .287 (27-for-94) with five doubles, one homer and 12 RBI in 24 games with Maryvale. Mateo, 23, a 5-11, 180 lb. second baseman from Santo Domingo, DR was selected by the Expos in the second round of the 1995 June Draft. In his first season at the Double-A level, Mateo batted .287 (152-for-530) with 25 doubles, 11 triples, five homers and 63 RBI with the Senators en route to setting career highs in all offensive categories. The speedster led the Eastern League with 48 stolen bases and was second only to Ruan in the organization. He is currently playing for Licey in the Domincan Winter League. Ruan, 21, a 6-0, 170 lb. outfielder from Ramon Santana, DR, was signed by the Expos as a non-drafted free agent in November 1996 by scout Fred Ferreira. Ruan had a career year, leading the entire organization with 64 stolen bases (2nd in the SAL) while batting .287 (165-for-574) with 29 doubles, 10 triples and 51 RBI with A-Cape Fear. The right-handed hitter also played in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game. He is currently playing for Estrellas in the Dominican Winter League. Martinez, 28, a 6-2, 215 lb. native of Santo Domingo, DR, was originally signed by Toronto as a non-drafted free-agent in January 1990. The left-handed hitter batted .300 (83-for-277) with 15 homers and 48 RBI in 86 games with AAA-Calgary last season before appearing in 10 games with the Florida Marlins. Martinez has a .233 (130-for-557) lifetime batting average in the majors spanning parts of six seasons with the Blue Jays’, Cubs’ and Marlins’ organizations. He has appeared in 213 major league contests after making his debut with Toronto in 1995. He was signed to a minor-league deal by the Expos on November 17. Bridges, 21, a 6-4, 220 lb. right-hander from Hattisburg, MS, was selected by the Expos in the first round (23rd overall) of the 1997 June Draft. Bridges was named the Expos’ Minor League Pitcher of the Month for May (4-1, 2.68 ERA in Jupiter) and June (4-2, 1.80 with two shut-outs in Harrisburg) and finished the season strong in August (4-2, 2.70, 3 CG, 1 SHO) as Harrisburg earned their fifth consecutive appearance in the Eastern League playoffs. Donnie was also impressive at Jupiter, posting a 5-5 record and 3.19 ERA, and dominated in Harrisburg after his promotion on June 1, finishing 11-7, 2.39 ERA with six complete games and four shutouts. He led the organization in wins, ERA, starts, complete games, shutouts, innings pitched and strikeouts as he went a combined 16-12, 2.69 ERA (60 ER-201.1 IP) with 150 strikeouts in 30 starts while limiting opposing hitters to a .221 BA. He wrapped up his season by going 0-2, 3.60 ERA (2 ER-5.0 IP) in two starts with Marvvale in the Arizona Fall League. With today’s transactions, the Expos now have 40 players on the winter roster.
